Lusscroft Farm Overview

Nestled in the hills of Sussex County, this iconic example of our vanishing rural heritage holds a unique place in the Garden State's agricultural history.

Lusscroft Farm is a one of a kind New Jersey state historic site. This 578 acre property has a rich and diverse past. Between 1914 and 1930, James Turner, a Montclair stockbroker, invested the considerable fortune of $500,000 to make Lusscroft a perfect model of dairy farming, employing the most innovative practices of the time based on scientific research.

In 1931, Mr. Turner donated his Lusscroft property to the State of New Jersey in order for it to be used as an agricultural research station. In August 2000, the State Historic Preservation Office determined that “the Experimental Station,” including its staff housing, barns and fields, is clearly eligible for listing on the National Register for its association with the development of agricultural techniques.

The Heritage and Agriculture Association  is a non-profit organization working to stabilize and then restore the buildings of this agriculturally significant gem. The goal of the association, as stated in a memorandum of understanding with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is to create and maintain an agricultural heritage center with emphasis and opportunities for education in the dairy industry, outdoor recreation, historical interpretation, equine trails, heirloom gardening, forestry, maple sugaring and all phases of farming from organic gardening to marketing value added products.

For more information, including a schedule of events on site please visit Lusscroft Farm - Home

The property contains 23 buildings including the Turner Mansion (a.k.a. Manorhouse), the Manager's Dwelling, the spectacular Outlook Lodge and the dairy barn and farm structures. The land includes fields and pastures, ponds, woodland and various barnyards.
