Sample lesson plan

Topic: Plant and Animal adaptations
Measurable Objectives:
1) The students will be able to name several animals or plants and state how they are specially adapted to the environments they live or grow in.
2) The students will be able to name the main environmental factors that have caused plants and animals to adapt to life in the fresh and salt water marsh.
3) The students will discover the biological concept of “ form follows function” as they explore several display animals and plants.
Materials and Equipment:
* Examples of wetland and upland plants
* examples of several animalia adapted to specific environments

1) Show the class a plant and animal. Pass around several blades of the plant.
2) Tell the children which environments the organisms live in.
3) Walk around the class showing an aquatic turtle.
4) Ask the students if they saw any adaptations that the plant or animal exhibited for living in its specific habitat.
5) Discuss with the students how animals adapt to their environment in order to survive.
6) Discuss the fact that change takes long periods of time and is related to the successful reproduction of the species.
7) Pass around several other examples of plants. Have the students try to guess the type of environment it lives in and ways it has adapted to its environment. Examples will include upland and wetland plants.
8) Explain the concept of form follows function by explaining the morphological differences in the land versus aquatic turtle.
9) Have the students break into four groups. Each will be assigned a specific type of habitat. Each group will list the environmental conditions present in the picture depicting their habitat. The students will then draw an imaginary animal containing possible adaptations dealing with the environmental conditions present with in their habitat.
Safety Concerns:
No students shall handle the turtles if they do they must wash their hands with soap and water.
