Description Walk through Mid-Town Elizabeth, NJ—where NJ began! See how it has grown & changed over the past 355 years. Tour includes interiors of First Presbyterian Church (founded 1664) & Boxwood Hall (where Washington was entertained) & the historic cemetery of First Pres. You won’t believe all the famous names you connected with the city. Restrooms available at the beginning and end of the walk.

High Point “First Day Challenge” Hike

Description Come and join us for our Fifth Annual High Point "First Day Challenge" Hike. This will be a great way to start off the new year and get in some exercise. The first, more rugged half of the hike will be on the Appalachian Trail (AT) in scenic High Point State Park. The return will be on the easier Iris Trail, a well-graded, old wagon road. There will be numerous scenic views along the AT on the ridge. Maximum elevation =1600 ft Minimum elevation =1300 ft. Members of NJ Search and Rescue will be along to assist.

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear, depending on conditions snowshoes or foot traction may be appropriate. Bring snacks, water, bagged lunch, binoculars and camera. This will be a strenuous hike. Although the pace will not be too rapid, please be realistic when assessing any medical conditions that may preclude such activities.

Age Dogs on leashes (max 6’) and children ages 12 and up with an adult are welcome.

Paulinskill Valley Trail Committee 37nd Annual New Year’s Day Hike

Description Join the Paulinskill Valley Trail Committee (PVTC) at 10:00AM on Saturday January 1, 2022 for their 37th Annual New Year’s Day Hike starting at Footbridge Park in Blairstown, NJ. The PVTC, the Officially Recognized Friends Organization of the Kittatinny Valley State Park, will host the hike. The length of the hike will be 4-5 miles. The trail is cinder-based which provides easy, level walking.

Difficulty Moderate ~ 4.5 miles. The cinder-based rail-trail provides easy, level walking.
Age Children with responsible adult are welcome. Dogs on a leash are welcome.

Ringwood State Park First Day Hike

Description A self-guided family friendly hike in the State Park woodlands at the NJ State Botanical Garden. This annual event is a joint project of State Park staff and volunteers from the NJBG/Skylands Association. Meet at the Carriage House Visitor Center at NJBG between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Map and hike directions will be provided at the start. Two possible routes, one route is flat terrain of the Botanical Garden and weather permitting; you can climb to the Mt. Defiance overlook on the Halifax trail.

Difficulty Easy to moderate ~1 or 3 miles.
Age Children with parents/guardians are welcome; small children may need to be carried on the longer hike. Service animals only.

Description Outdoor activity! A brisk hike around scenic Lake Wawayanda, enjoying the grays and browns of the Winter Forest as well as lush Rhododendron stands. Princeton Nursery Lands First Day Hike

Description Friends of Princeton Nursery Lands invites everyone to a First Day Hike in the Mapleton Preserve on Monday, January 1, 2022, at noon. Exercise your New Year's resolution to walk more, or make new friends on this easy 1.5 mile loop hike through the Mapleton Preserve. We know you will want to sleep in a little, so the walk will not start until noon. It will begin and end at the Mapleton Preserve/D&R Canal State Park Headquarters at 145 Mapleton Road in Kingston. Description Ring in the New Year at beautiful Island Beach State Park! Join the Friends of IBSP for a scenic walk down the beach. Walk is approximately 1 mile out and back, but feel free to turn back at anytime. Winter is a great time to experience the natural beauty of the IBSP! Bonfire and smores to follow, weather permitting.

Perrine Hill and Sutfin Farm Hiking Tour

Description Hike through the farm fields where George Washington Commanded the Continental Army and Molly Pitcher fought during the Battle of Monmouth. This guided hike will let you enjoy the natural beauty while learning about the people and events of the Revolutionary War battle that took place here in June 1778. No restrooms along hike.

Difficulty Moderate ~ 2 miles. (Slow pace, with historical interpretation. Over open fields with uneven surfaces.)

New Year’s Hike at Round Valley

Description Whatever you did the night before, this is your chance to get outdoors in New Jersey and start 2022 off on the right foot. We’ll hike either The Cushetunk or Water Trail and look for the wildlife that that endure our shortest days.

Difficulty Easy to moderate ~ 3 miles
Age Children with adult’s welcome, service animals only. Bring along water, snacks and binoculars. Wear comfortable & sturdy footwear as terrain is all natural and not paved.

Warren Highlands Trail

Description Hike the rugged Warren Highlands Trail sixteen miles between Phillipsburg and Ragged Ridge, Warren County NJ. 16 mile point to point hike on the Warren Highlands Trail route, under development, between Phillipsburg and Ragged Ridge, Warren County NJ. The route includes rugged terrain including Ragged Ridge, Buckhorn Creek, Hoff Vanatta Farmstead, Merrill Creek, Miller Farm, Shandor Summit, Marble Hill, and much more.

Difficulty Difficult ~ 15 miles (This is an ALL DAY event; not for beginners)
Age Children ages 10 and up who can hike 15 miles in the winter and are accompanied by parents/guardians are welcome. Dogs on a leash are welcome. All participants need to be aware of the duration of the hike and prepare accordingly. Bring water, snacks and lunch as the group will not be passing by any stores. No restrooms are available.

Description Make a resolution and start your new year right by celebrating history atop the North Tower at Twin Lights! The North Tower will be open between the hours of 10:00-3:30 for a self-guided walk up the 64 steps to amazing views. Please bring along binoculars and warm clothes as the tower is not heated.

Old Dutch New Year: Talk of the Taverns

Description Catch the “talk of the taverns” on this guided walk in historic Somerville. Pause at several sights to learn about Somerville’s eighteenth-century Tunison's Tavern and George Washington’s passage through this area 245 years ago in January 1777 following the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. Return to our “Sign of the Red Lion Tavern” as the sun sets and "illumination" by candlelight begins.

West Pine Plains Hike

  • Bass River State Forest

Description Join us for a hike in Bass River State Forest “North” which encompasses the West Pine Plains and the “Pygmy Pines” – the worldʼs largest acreage of this globally rare forest community. Large portions of the hike will be through places where the mature trees are scarcely taller than the hikers themselves and in some places are not. The hike will traverse several ridges that will provide fantastic views of the surrounding area. The hike will be almost entirely through parts of the forest that was burned in the March 2019 Spring Hill wildfire. Restrooms are not available.

Difficulty Moderate ~ 6 miles
Age Children ages 10 accompanied by an adult and older are welcome to register. Service dogs only.
Registration Registration is required and is capped at 25 participants. To register or for more information, contact the Bass River State Forest office at 609-296-1114. If you register and decide not to come, please let the forest office know so that others can attend. These hikes typically fill up very quickly. Registered participants will be notified if the hike is cancelled due to weather.

Meeting Location N 39 49.238 W 74 25.819 which is located along NJ 72 between mile markers 10 and 10.5 at the WESTERN BOUNDARY of Coyle Field. The location is approximately 10.3 miles east of the intersection of NJ 72 and NJ 70 and approximately 3.4 miles west of the intersection of NJ 72 and Ocean County Road 539. Parking is along NJ 72.

Little Pine Plains & Keith Line Hike

Description The hike will take place in the Warren Grove Recreation Area which is part of Bass River State Forest and encompasses the Little Pine Plains and the "Pygmy Pines" - the world's largest acreage of this globally rare forest community. Of historical and geographical note, this hike will follow a mile of the 1686 Keith Line -- the line that started it all -- which divided the New Jersey Province into East and West Jersey. Restrooms are not available.

Difficulty Moderate ~ 5 miles
Age Children ages 10 accompanied by an adult and older are welcome to register. Service dogs only.

Directions: Turn onto Simm Place Road from Ocean County Road 539 in “downtown” Warren Grove. Take the first right on Simm Place Road and turn onto Beaver Dam Road. Follow Beaver Dam Road approximately 0.8 miles to intersection of Radio Tower Road.

Second Annual First Day Hike at Tall Pines Preserve

Due to forecasted inclement weather this First Day Hike has been postponed to Sunday, January 2.

Description The Friends of Tall Pines State Preserve invite you to join us and welcome in the New Year 2022 with our 2nd annual First Day Tall Pines Hike. The Friends will lead a leisurely walk along the trails of Tall Pines to observe the calm beauty of the Preserve in winter and to view the remarkably active bird life at the Preserve this time of year. Please bring binoculars or camera if you have one, and light refreshments will be served after the hike.

Age Children of all ages and dogs on leash are welcome. There are no restroom facilities at Tall Pines Preserve. Light refreshments will be served after the hike.

Description Grab your Dog and Leash to join Megan and her Furry Friends for a hike through Belleplain’s Beautiful Forest. Megan started the first day dog hikes 5 years ago and is continuing the tradition to ring in 2022! She will take you on a few different trail systems to highlight the diverse forest landscape of Cape May County. Afterward, enjoy tea, hot cocoa and homemade treats (and homemade treats for the dogs as well!) around a campfire at the office! Restrooms available at the park office.

Description Join our naturalists to start the new year off with a 2 mile hike in Brendan T. Byrne State Forest! Description Join Parvin’s Seasonal Naturalists and our local NJ Watershed Ambassador for a lovely winter hike in honor of the New Year! Situated on the “edge” of the Pine Barrens, come explore Parvin’s pine-oak forests and Atlantic white cedar swamps on this 3-mile nature walk around Parvin Lake. Please dress appropriately and bring along binoculars and cameras. Restrooms available.

Description Old road, old bridge, old canal….visit them all on this short, easy, hike that’s tailored to get you out and enjoying the morning scenes of the Pines with friends. Other walks available in the area for those wishing to make a day of it. Otherwise, let us get you started in 2022 with something short and sweet. Restrooms are not available.

Age Children ages 10 accompanied by an adult and older are welcome to register. Dogs on leash are also welcome.

Description Join Pinelands Institute at Whitesbog Village for a fun First Day Hike! Meet at the General Store at 10 a.m. Start your New Year off with nature and history! Your hiking guides have knowledge of the pine barrens and the history of the cranberry and blueberry industries in NJ.

Age All ages are welcome, children must accompanied by an adult. Dogs on leash are welcome.

The New Jersey State Park Service is hosting 28 hikes and 1 lighthouse climb in state parks, forests and historic sites on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes program.

These free First Day Hikes offer a great incentive to get outside, exercise, experience history, enjoy nature, and celebrate the New Year with friends and family in one of your state parks.


Hiking Tips

For all hikes and rides, wear sturdy footgear and bring water and snacks. Check the weather before you leave the house and wear weather-appropriate clothing. Layers are best for exercising in colder temperatures.
